Learning from Leading across generations in the workplace Masterclass

Posted by: Admin - Posted on:

Led by Carys Ward, Workplace and Coaching Psychologist, this masterclass explored the opportunities and challenges of leading a multi-generational workforce in today’s evolving workplace.

This session explored what people need to thrive at work and how those needs evolve across different stages of life and career. At its core, effective leadership starts with a simple but powerful question:
“Where is this person in their career and life, and how can I support them to bring their best to work?”

While core principles such as wellbeing, purpose, and support are universal, how they show up varies across generations and life stages.

As organisations bring together colleagues from different generations, each with distinct experiences, expectations, and working styles, the session highlighted why understanding these differences is critical to building cohesive, high-performing teams.

The session reinforced that generational differences are shaped by life stage and experience, not personality, and that each generation brings unique strengths. Effective leaders:

  • Take time to understand individuals, rather than relying on assumptions.
  • Focus on strengths and what each person brings to the team.
  • Adapt their approach, including 1:1 conversations, to meet different needs.
  • Support teams to navigate and value differences.

Key themes included:

  • Understanding generational perspectives and what shapes them.
  • Addressing common misconceptions and avoiding stereotypes.
  • Adapting leadership styles to engage a diverse workforce.
  • Creating inclusive environments where all generations can thrive.

The session emphasised that effective leadership across generations is not about managing differences, but about harnessing them, turning diversity of thought and experience into a strength.

By recognising and responding to the evolving needs of their workforce, leaders can:

  • Build more inclusive and supportive team cultures.
  • Improve engagement, retention, and performance.
  • Enable individuals and teams to thrive.
