Healthy Leadership Framework

The Healthy Leadership Framework was developed out of recognition of the impact good leadership and management have on employee wellbeing.

The aim was to identify a behavioural framework that could be used flexibly to support healthy leadership development and help leaders promote positive wellbeing in the workplace.

The Healthy Leadership Framework can support leaders and OD practitioners in many ways:

  • Supporting self-development, identifying ways that leaders already model healthy leadership behaviour at work, and opportunities for further development.
  • Supporting conversations in teams, across organisations.
  • Informing training and development programmes.
  • Informing organisations’ health and wellbeing strategies when considering workplace health and wellbeing (for individuals, teams, managers/leaders).

About the framework

The Healthy Leadership Framework has 3 themes:

How I am (being): Actively engage with opportunities to understand and enhance positive mental and physical health for self and others, sharing own experience; being authentic.

What I do (doing): Actively support and empower others to manage work and how it’s done.

What we do together (enabling): Actively empower an inclusive healthy wellness culture that mutually enables us all to bring our whole selves to work.

A scoping project explored the relationship between health and wellbeing and leadership while identifying the leadership behaviours that enable and encourage employee health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Within each theme there are leadership and management behaviours that contribute positively to employee wellbeing and leadership and management behaviours that contribute negatively to employee wellbeing. The behaviours were shared widely and voted on publicly to help identify which had the greatest impact, ensuring employee views informed every stage of the project.
