Healthcare Leadership Model (HLM)

The Healthcare Leadership Model (HLM) was developed to help you become a better leader in your day-to-day role.

The Healthcare Leadership Model describes what good leaders do, and it will help you develop as a leader by showing you how your leadership behaviours affect the culture and climate you, your colleagues and teams work in.

You’ll be asked questions to help think about how what you do and how you behave affect others. These are the questions that guide leaders’ thoughts and result in effective leadership behaviour.

You don’t have to be in a clinical or service setting to use it and it doesn’t matter whether you work in a team of five or are responsible for 5,000. The model is useful for everyone because it describes the things you can see leaders doing at work and demonstrates how you can develop as a leader.

What is HLM?

The HLM has been developed to create a vision for leadership, one that reflects the very best in care and compassion, alongside a focus on excellence in strategy, vision, direction and engagement.

The model has nine dimensions. Each dimension is made up of:

  • a brief description of what the dimension is about,
  • why it is important,
  • a section that says ‘what it is not’ to provide further clarity.

Other resources

The HLM focuses on building capability to enable people to meet future challenges; using a range of experiences as a vehicle for individual and organisational learning; acting as a role model for personal development.

Self-Assessment involves completing a questionnaire to generate a report which will help you to assess your leadership behaviours, and highlight areas of strength, weakness, and areas that you may need greater focus on, to help you fully understand your leadership development.

The questionnaire encourages you to think about which dimensions of the HLM are particularly important for your role, and will help you to compare how you rate yourself in these dimensions to inform your development plans. Once you have finished the questionnaire, you will have access to your downloadable PDF report which summarises your ratings.

360 Feedback involves getting confidential feedback from others to help give insight into their perceptions of your leadership abilities and behaviour.

It is a powerful tool to help you identify where your leadership strengths and development needs lie regardless of job role. The process includes getting confidential feedback from line managers, peers and direct reports (if applicable). As a result, it gives an insight into other people’s perceptions of your leadership abilities and behaviour.

An accredited feedback facilitator will work with you in a dedicated feedback session to help you interpret your report.

Leaders champion learning and capability development with many skills that crossover with development utilised during Coaching and Mentoring. These skills, knowledge and experience are used to meet the future needs of the service, develop their own potential, and learn from both success and failure. Facilitators are an integral part to the Leadership Model as they ensure the participant understands the report, data and context in which it is offered. If you would like to discuss an internal facilitator training session for your organisation please contact us [email protected].

Following the evolution of the HLM 360° Feedback Framework and activity across the North West region, the HLM Train the Trainer Programme is a development opportunity to enable current HLM facilitators to become facilitator trainers. If you would like to express interest in this please contact us [email protected].
