Mary Seacole Local

The Mary Seacole Programme is a highly successful and nationally recognised leadership development programme for first time leaders in health and care.

About Mary Seacole Local

The Mary Seacole programme was designed by the NHS Leadership Academy in partnership with global experts, Korn Ferry Hay Group to develop knowledge and skills in leadership and management. In order to maximise the accessibility and reach of this leadership course, the Mary Seacole Programme is now available to access via host organisations in each of the three North West footprints.

The concept of learning how to be a leader when you’re in the thick of your day to day responsibilities can seem rather abstract. The Mary Seacole programme is grounded in reality, and results in real workplace application. It aims to provide the balance between learning the theory and putting it into practice.

What’s included

The six month programme includes:

  • 100 hours of online study which includes a virtual campus with interactive content, films, discussion forums and online resources.
  • Three face-to-face workshops, working with an expert facilitator.
  • 12 modules covering leadership fundamentals, fundamentals of finance, recruitment and selection, fundamentals of HR, appraisals and annual review.
  • A single written assignment at the end, asking participants to reflect on their leadership impact.
Quote / Testimonial:

“The blended learning approach and content of the e-learning is brilliant. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to engage with colleagues from within my own and other organisations. I have learnt about the history of leadership in the NHS and also about the benefits of strengthening clinical leadership – which is knowledge I did not previously have. This programme is far more robust, more practical and easier to understand than others I have accessed. I would recommend it to all of my team and first time leaders within the NHS – it provides a very important foundation.”

Who is it for?

The programme is designed for those in their first formal leadership role, both clinical and non-clinical. It empowers people to turn their individual success into team success, and to champion compassionate patient care.

How to access the programme

The localised programme aims to support leadership development in each of the three footprint areas; building a richer talent pipeline of emergent leaders in the local health and care system. At a cost of £150, the Mary Seacole Local programme offers an 85% reduction on the national programme cost. Our North West host organisations have created a community of local facilitators who will deliver the programme; bringing their knowledge of local health and care systems to further enhance learning.
