Mentoring

Mentoring develops leaders through the sharing of knowledge, skills and experience, and is available to a diverse range of employees. Cross-organisational, cross-professional and peer mentoring relationships are actively encouraged to widen horizons. Working with a mentor can create a greater self-awareness of an individual’s unique talents and identify gaps in their current skill set.

“Mentoring can be rewarding and challenging. Receiving mentoring is a safe space to develop. Straight away I can see the application with colleagues and patients with regard to my interactions, developing myself and others.”

Developing individual and collective leadership through mentoring is vital, considering the ongoing transformation both within the NHS and across the wider public sector. To meet the ambitions for the future of health and care, mentoring can:

Recognise and value the diversity of talent within and across existing workforces.

Connect people to enable development where the work happens.

Generate collective leadership capacity to lead innovation.

Cross professional and/or organisational boundaries, to develop a wider understanding and view of the ‘bigger picture’.

Offer an external sounding board and ‘time-out’ for reflection, feedback, challenge, and support.

Foster mutually developmental partnerships

Access as a mentor or mentee on the Coaching and Mentoring Hub is open to all employees working in NHS organisations in the North West (Cheshire and Merseyside, Greater Manchester, and Lancashire and South Cumbria).

New mentors will need to undertake a Mentor Development Programme, which is hosted by the NHS North West Leadership Academy prior to beginning a mentoring relationship.
Log in or register on the Coaching and Mentoring Hub

Delivered virtually, the Mentor Development Programme provides participants with the knowledge and skills to begin mentoring and join the NHS North West mentoring community, utilising the Coaching and Mentoring Hub.

These virtual sessions are a mixture of group work, discussions, practical activities as well as space for individual reflections and breaks to maintain energy. There will be some pre-programme reading and activities in preparation.

“I really enjoyed the [Mentor Development Programme]. It has given me the confidence to take on a mentee, and the tools needed to get the most out of our sessions. It has broken down my initial view of being a mentor and opened a greater understanding of what is involved.”
