Citizen Leadership Toolkit

There is a recognized need for citizens to be empowered to take ownership of their personal health and wellbeing, and it is essential to build capacity within communities to shape the future collectively..

The Citizen Leadership Programme supports participants to:

  • Grow in confidence as citizen leaders, enabling them to engage effectively with key health and social care decision-makers.
  • Develop communication skills that allow them to represent themselves and others in discussions with decision-makers.
  • Share their lived experiences to inform and influence change.
  • Explore opportunities to become members of decision-making bodies and contribute to the development of public services.

The Citizen Leadership Toolkit has been designed to help organisations and communities access the programme’s content and learning materials. It enables delivery of the programme within local areas and across diverse citizen groups. Using the toolkit and resources, the programme can be delivered either face-to-face or virtually.

It covers key considerations before launching the programme, strategies for virtual recruitment, and practical advice for delivery, including the art of hosting online sessions, creating psychological safety in virtual spaces, and designing activities that maximise engagement.
This resource is intended to be used alongside other programme materials, and it is recommended that all resources are utilised together to access the full range of ideas and tips that can help create an effective and engaging virtual programme.
